How to Stop Stuttering and Lag in Any Game

Stutter, the brief freezes you feel even when your FPS number looks fine, usually comes from a few common causes. Online lag is a separate network problem, so this guide focuses on stutter.

Where these fixes help

Look at frame times, not just FPS. Stutter is uneven delivery of frames, so a game can show a high average FPS and still feel bad. A frame-time graph shows how long each frame takes, and tools such as MSI Afterburner can display one in-game. Spikes tell you something is wrong, and when they happen tells you why.

Let shaders finish compiling. Shaders are small programs your graphics card runs to draw effects, and compiling them in real time is a common cause of stutter on modern PCs. It tends to show up the first time you see a new effect or area, then fade. If the game has a shader pre-compilation option, let it finish. Steam also has shader pre-caching, which shares precompiled shaders with players on matching graphics hardware.

Cut background load. Overlays from apps like Discord, Steam or Xbox Game Bar, and downloads running in other launchers, can compete with your game for resources. Close what you don’t need, and check Task Manager for anything using lots of processor or disk.

Check temperatures. When a processor or graphics card gets too hot, it can slow itself down, which is called thermal throttling, and frame rates become inconsistent. A sign is graphics clock speeds dropping as temperatures climb. Make sure vents and fans aren’t blocked.

Where it falls short

Settings can’t fix every stutter. Running out of video memory, slow storage and heavy asset streaming, where the game loads data as you move, can also cause hitches. A PC that’s simply too weak for a game needs lower settings, not clever tweaks. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.

Stay safe

Skip “FPS booster” programs and registry tweaks that promise instant fixes, since the built-in options above are safer and easier to undo. Get graphics drivers only from your graphics maker’s official site. Be aware that deleting a shader cache can bring stutter back until the game rebuilds it.

A good starting point

Pick one game that stutters and turn on a frame-time graph. Play for ten minutes and note whether the spikes happen only the first time you see something or all the time.
