Gaming Myths: 10 Things Players Still Believe
Gaming has plenty of beliefs that get repeated until they sound like facts. Here are ten worth questioning.
1. You need a new PC to enjoy games
Plenty of great games, old and new, run fine on weak hardware. Fun doesn’t scale with your graphics card.
2. Ultra settings always look much better
The jump from high to ultra is often tiny, while the performance cost can be big. Lowering a few settings usually costs you very little visually.
3. The human eye can’t see more than 30 FPS
Most people can easily tell 30 FPS from 60. Higher frame rates also feel smoother and more responsive.
4. Violent games make people violent
Researchers have not found a clear link between playing violent games and real-world violence. Context matters, and most players are fine.
5. Gaming is just for kids
Surveys consistently show that most players are adults. Gaming covers every age.
6. More RAM always means faster games
Once you have enough for a game, extra RAM does little. Your graphics card and processor usually matter more.
7. Old games are worse than new ones
Graphics age, but good design doesn’t. Many older games are still more fun than newer ones with better visuals.
8. Mods are cheating or unsafe
Mods for single-player games are normal and often encouraged. The risk comes from shady downloads, so use well-known sources. Using mods in online games is a different story and can get you banned.
9. Free “cracked” downloads are harmless
They often come bundled with malware. If a paid game is out of reach, wait for a sale or try a free-to-play title.
10. A high review score means you’ll like it
Scores average many opinions. A game with an 85 can still be wrong for you, so read what a review actually says.
The best way to learn which myths apply to you is to test them on your own setup.
