8GB vs 16GB vs 32GB RAM for Gaming: What You Actually Need
I’m on a computer from 2017, so I’d rather know what I need than pay for what I don’t, especially at today’s memory prices. I compared what recent tests actually show. Here’s what works.
Skip 8GB for anything new
Most 2026 guides I checked say to avoid 8GB for gaming. Even the ones that call it a minimum recommend 16GB.
Start at 16GB
In one January 2026 test, Cyberpunk 2077 averaged 128fps on 16GB and 129fps on 32GB at 1080p. For pure gaming, the averages barely moved.
Pick 32GB for smoother lows
The same test found the 1% and 0.1% lows were better with 32GB, which means fewer stutters. It also helps if you keep creative apps open while you play.
Use two sticks, not one
Retailer guides say two matching sticks beat a single stick of the same total size, because they run in dual channel.
Check your own use
Before I paid extra for 32GB, I’d look at what I actually keep open while gaming.
You don’t need the biggest number on the box. You just need enough that your games stop waiting on memory.
